One of my true loves - square cookie cutters

My set of square cookies cutters has become near and dear to my heart.  You see, I use them more than any other shape.

And the reason for this?  Well, it is not only darling with the little scalloped edges - it is also extremely versatile.  I can use a square shape for any holiday, occasion, or theme.

Here, I stacked two heart cookies on top of my stalwart square!

Some royal icing roses climbing up the stack, make for a sweet Valentine nibble.

Do you want to know a secret about square cookies?
They are by far the easiest shape to outline (at least for this cookie baker).   If I am making a large quantity, I will always choose a square over a circle because I can make a clean outline with more accuracy and speed.

Yep, it's hip to be square.

I have owned this set for the last two years, and I have used them almost non-stop.
True love!

Valentine cookie on a stick tutorial

Think pop tart on steroids.

I made these little dolls for three of my sweethearts, and the process is quite easy.  First, cut out your hearts - two for each pop.

Put the first heart on your baking sheet, and then cut a small heart opening in the center of the second heart.

Place about 1 1/2 tsp. of jam in the center of the first heart.  I always use strawberry jam, but you could use whatever kind you prefer.

Yes, my cookie sheets are looking battle worn.  One of these days I will try the baking soda/peroxide concoction from Pintrest to clean them up.
Now place a lolly pop stick on top.  Put it up far enough to be secure, but not far enough to show.  If you do have a little showing through the opening, just put a little jam on top to conceal it.

Place the heart with the small cut out on top.

See the tip of the stick showing?  A dab of jam hid it.

Use the tines of a fork to seal the edges securely.

I used my normal sugar cookie dough, but baked a few additional minutes to make sure the top cookie got completely done.  I baked mine about 9 minutes at 350 degrees.  I started checking them at 7 minutes, and kept a really close eye on them.  Once they are out of the oven, keep them on the cookie sheet to cool for about 10 minutes.  This ensures a safe transfer to the cooling rack.

The decorating can be as easy or involved as you want.  If you don't want to embellish with royal icing, you can sprinkle the tops with regular or sanding sugar before they go in the oven.  I have done this before, and they look great.  To do a simple royal icing treatment, you could make little hearts or write the recipient's name.  I chose to make flowers reminiscent of Victorian valentines.

Tying a bright green ribbon on the stick, gives it an extra dose of color and interest.

Valentine cookie care packages

It is a fact that I am in PINK heaven this time of year.
I love sending care packages to my sons (Philly, Japan, and Washington D.C.) as well my family back in Iowa.
I am crazy about my two little nieces and baby nephew, and when I made these little love bugs, I had the girls in mind.

I used large heart sprinkles for the heads and a simple wet on wet swirl for the wings.

These little ones will always BEE in my heart!

Since I was on a wet on wet roll, I made an Ikat inspired design.

Pink lace is ever so sweet!

These hearts have sanding sugar used on the bows for extra texture.

How about some Mehndi inspiration?

One of my favorite things to do is crochet lace designs, and what better place than on a red heart?

And what could be cuter than some little heart cup sitters?
They make coffee, tea, or milk a lot more fun!

I have a really fun tutorial coming up next.

Valentine love

Wishing everyone a Valentine's Day full of

Find someone special to hug today.

Your sweetie, kids, grandchildren, mom, or furry members of your family all qualify!

To me, Valentine's day isn't just about romance.  It is about appreciating the special people in your life and letting them know how much you love them.

Having a peanut butter truffle today doesn't hurt either!

Sending enormous hugs to my wonderful sons in the middle east.  I am so proud of you both!

Sweetie pies

I was in a pie baking kind of mood today.

And because anything is more fun when it is in an individual portion, I made single serving pies.

Think fast food pies, but cuter.

I made the Barefoot Contessa's pastry dough and then rolled and cut out heart shapes.

Next, I made filling out what I had on hand; apples, pears, dates, and a few caramel bits (for fun!).   I cut heart shapes out of the center of the top crusts for venting.

To make them extra special, I painted roses and leaves with food coloring.  Before I slipped them in the oven, I carefully brushed cream on the unpainted areas and sprinkled them with sugar.

To be cautious, I lightly covered them with foil to prevent them from over browning and ruining the colors.

Then I gave my sweetie pies to my real life sweetie pies.

Did I just make the first shabby chic pie?

Valentine Swiss cake roll with a special twist

Do you know what is special about this cake?
See the red scroll work?  It isn't frosting.  Here is a closer look.

That's right boys and girls, it is red cake batter!

I know - crazy and fabulous!

After baking, cooling, and admiring the genoise, I filled it with red Swiss meringue buttercream that I had in the freezer.  IMHO, ice cream is the way to go with a cake roll, but I didn't have any on hand and didn't want to run to the grocery store.

I try really hard to come up with my own ideas here at the E.O, but when I saw this technique, I knew I had to try it.  The GENIUS who came up with this fabulosity is Sandee at La Receta de la Felicidad.

I can't wait to try other designs and flavors.  Oh my, this is FUN!

All I can say is

Swiss cake roll with red valentine swirls!

The family has started squawking a little about the lack of sugar around here, so this should appease them.  And being a virtuous woman who did an hour of dancing on the Xbox Dance 3 AND spent some quality time with Billy Blank's Cardio Inferno Bootcamp,  I could probably get away with having a piece of my masterpiece.

I am going to TRY not to.

I said TRY, not PROMISE...

Tattoo cookies

Each one of my children at one time or another asked me what I would do if they got a tattoo.  Understand that I am in the over 50 crowd, and tattoos aren't something that were mainstream for most of my life.

Now, don't get mad at me tat fans, it just isn't my thing.  And besides I know that my capricious nature would have me getting a butterfly then wishing I had done a heart, then thinking a Celtic knot would be better, then an inspirational word like LOVE or IMAGINE or DREAM.   I like changing things up so I think you get the picture.  I would eventually run out of skin.

So getting back to my kids' question.  I am a big believer in reverse psychology (and bribes), so I didn't want to scream "No way",  "Over my dead body" or "I FOOOOOOOORBID you!".  Instead, I said that would be great as long as it says

I LOVE MOM

Since the older three brothers are quite busy at the moment, I thought I would be a really nice mom and come up with some designs for them.

This would look good on Drew's back.

How about this on the green beret's shoulder?

And I think Teddy should have this proudly emblazoned on his chest.

Maybe I am starting to warm up to the idea of my kids and tattoos.

Steampunk valentine cookies

I tried in my own words to describe steampunk to my husband, and I could not.  Even though it is a style that I am drawn to - it is interesting, odd, kind of vintage, and for me defied description.

So I googled a definition, and after reading through several of them, I was still stumped.  Isn't it strange that I can point out an example of it in a heartbeat, but for the life of me not be able to put it into words.

But, I can put it on a cookie.  This is my version of an anatomical heart that has been steampunked.

I am in valentine's day mode and all.

I finally found a definition at The Clockwork Century that made sense.  It is like a view of the future from the past that never happened.  That got you scratching your head didn't it?

Apparently, there is quite a bit of  CONTROVERSY about what qualifies as steampunk and what does not.  Had no idea my icing and I were walking straight into a hornet's nest.

Hope my little cookies don't make anyone mad  :)
