Turkey and pumpkin Thanksgiving cookies

Did you ever just have ONE OF THOSE DAYS?
You know, despite the best of efforts things just seem to go wrong?
That was my yesterday.  I had been scheduled to give a cookie decorating presentation to a new comers club, and I had a grand time prepared.  On a typical Monday evening, I have not too much going on - maybe watching The Mob Doctor at nine.  But wouldn't you know it - my son's football game last Friday was cancelled due to power outages at the opponents school and was rescheduled for Monday evening.  Both events were slated for 7 pm.   Missing the game was not an option because it was Alec's senior year last game (sniff), but the presentation was a commitment I made over a month ago and I didn't feel right about ditching at the last minute.

My solution?  Do a top of the club mini presentation and get to the football game late.  So here is how the presentation went; I ran out of ink in my printer so the cute tutorial I had written was a no go, my photo album of cookies was accidentally left behind at my daughter's orthodontists office (don't ask), I loaded my cookie presentation in the car about an hour before leaving and the cold made my icing colors mottle, and my presentation was a 15 minutes brain dump.
Awesome.

The moral of the story is:
Check the ink cartridge.
Don't lose your photo book.
Never place cookies in a cold car (or a hot one for that matter).

On a happier note, the Blue Devils won 62 - 7.
Very bittersweet watching my baby boy play his last game.
Love you Pooh Bear!

Sorry about that new comers...

Ikat pumpkin cookies

I was looking for fabric to make some new curtains, when I had the idea of doing an ikat design on cookies in
HALLOWEEN COLORS!

I have to look at the design for a while to try and formulate a plan to make it work in icing.

I am such a happy baker when it happens!

When I stopped to think about it, I realized that I have done a number of cookies that have been inspired by textiles.

Last week I did crochet lace on pumpkin cookies,

and a more traditional lace on hearts,

a number of argyle cookies,

and even toile.

I really enjoy looking at fabrics, but unfortunately, I don't like to sew.
Good thing I know how to do it on a cookie!

Pumpkin cookies and a reunion

I got a call the other night from my college roomate Mary saying she was in the area and wanted to get together.  Shamefully, we hadn't seen each other in 17 years.  Kids, schedules, and geographic distance played a big part in our not being able to connect.  But 17 years?  Like I said - shameful.

Of course, there needed to be cookies for my long lost bestie.

With it being the first of October, it was time to bust out the first of my halloween cookies and use my two new pumpkin cutters.

What I really wanted to make for Mary was a batch of Rosanne Rosanadana cookies in honor of her most memorable halloween costume in college.  She was HILARIOUS as Gilda Radner, and stayed in character all night long.

But alas, I didn't have the time for that, so I had to make do with pumpkins.

Think of these as my version of the black and white cookie for halloween.

Probably my best halloween costume was the year I went as a witch.  I had the usual cape and black hat on for most of the party, but I had a surprise under my hat.  My hair was long, and I put a plastic cup on top of my head and gathered my hair up and around it and pony tailed and hair sprayed the living daylights out of it.  You couldn't see the cup at all, and it looked like my hair stood straight up in the shape of the witches hat.  I then put the hat carefully on top of the hair and tied it underneath my chin.

About mid way through the party, I said "wow, it's getting hot in here, I need to take my hat off".  Off it came, the hair unveiled, and the look on everyone's faces was priceless.  My one great moment in comedy.

Who says a witch can't have a stylish updo?

So Rosanne Rosanadana and the the well coiffed witch laughed and hugged and cried their way through lunch yesterday.  And you can bet it won't be another 17 years before we see each other again.  Because if it is, we will have to be meeting up on our hover rounds...
